Dr. Alfred O. Coffin was the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in biology. His faculty experience included positions at both Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Alcorn State University) and Wiley College, where he taught both biology and romance languages.

Fun Fact: Dr. Coffin also published several books on the history of people of Mexico, making him the first Black American to publish scholarly books on Latin Americans.
