Dr. Bertram Oliver Fraser-Reid is a chemist and professor whose research in pheromones concluded that all synthetic products derived from petroleum can be made from sugars. He served on the faculty at the University of Waterloo, University of Maryland, and Duke University. He also founded Natural Products/Glycotechnology Research Institute upon retirement, a nonprofit dedicated to researching carbohydrate-based vaccines to fight diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis.

Fun Fact: Although it was not publicly announced, Dr. Fraser-Reid is said to have been nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1998.
