Dr. Clarence F. Stephens was the ninth Black Ph.D. graduate in math in the country. He began his career in higher education at Prairie View A&M University and later moved to Morgan State University, where he decided to shift his career focus from research to teaching excellence in math. From there, Dr. Stephens eventually moved to SUNY Potsdamn, where as department chair, he led the department to becoming nationally known for their teaching excellence in math, including being recognized as country’s top producer of math majors.
