Dr. Euphemia Lofton Haynes was the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics (1949). She taught in Washington, DC Public Schools for over 40 years. In 1959, Dr. Haynes retired from public education and created and chaired the Department of Mathematics at the University of District Columbia and was an adjunct professor at Howard University. A DC native, Dr. Haynes was also the first woman to chair the DC Board of Education in 1966.
