Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville is the second Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in math. Despite completing her Ph.D. from Yale University, opportunities to pursue academic careers at Ivy-league institutions were unavailable to Black women at the time. Dr. Granville began her career at Fisk University, where she taught fellow representers Drs. Vivienne Malone-Mayes and Etta Zuber Falconer. In 1956, Dr. Granville began her career at IBM as a computer programmer and later worked on several NASA projects, including the Apollo program. She later assumed academic positions at California State University, Los Angeles and Texas College, and she is a staunch advocate for women in computing.
