Dr. Frederick D. Stubbs was the first Black thoracic surgeon in Philadelphia. His contributions to the medical field included the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Dr. Stubbs was critical to the development of Philadelphia’s public health system. When appointed as an assistant surgeon at Philadelphia General Hospital, he became the first Black person on the facility’s staff. He also held positions at Philadelphia’s two Black hospitals: Douglass Memorial Hospital and Mercy Hospital, eventually becoming the Chief Surgeon at both.

While a medical student at Harvard, Dr. Stubbs became the first Black person at the university elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, an honorary medical fraternity.
