Dr. Gloria C. Hewitt is the fourth Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics and first Black woman to chair a mathematics department. Studying under Dr. Lee Lorch at Fisk University, her mathematical skills resulted in his recommendation to the University of Washington (St. Louis) to pursue a Ph.D. before she ever applied. She served as a professor at the University of Montana, including chairing the Department of Mathematics. When asked about her experience in the field, Dr. Hewitt is credited with saying, “In short, my life in mathematics was, and still to a great extent is, shaped by opening doors. I have always taken advantage and walked in.”
