Dr. Hadiya Nicole Green is the second Black woman and fourth Black person to earn a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is the founder of the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation, which was named after her late aunt (Ora Lee Smith) and uncle (General Lee Smith), who raised her. After they both lost battles to cancer, Dr. Green dedicated herself to finding a better way to treat the disease without the terrible side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. She has currently developed a patent-pending laser treatment in mice that shows promising results for humans. Dr. Green is currently an assistant professor at Morehouse School of Medicine and, prior to that, was a member of the faculty at Tuskegee University.
