Dr. Helen O. Dickens was the first Black woman to be admitted to the American College of Surgeons. The daughter of a former slave, Dr. Dickens became an obstetrician/gynecologist who specialized in teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. She also spearheaded the use of pap tests to detect cervical cancer.
