Dr. Herman Branson discovered the alpha-helix protein structure and significantly contributed to understanding proteins and their contributions to diseases such as sickle cell anemia. Dr. Branson spent majority of his career at HBCUs, including faculty positions at Dillard University and Howard University. He also served as president of two HBCUs: Central State University and Lincoln University.
