Dr. Jennie R. Patrick is the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in chemical engineering. Her first position was with General Electric Research Laboratory and later Philip Morris, among other companies. Dr. Patrick also served as an adjunct professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Georgia Institute of Technology before leaving industry to pursue a full-time career in academia at Tuskegee University, where she was the first scientist to earn the Eminent Scholar’s Chair at the university. Dr. Patrick initially began her undergraduate studies in chemical engineering at Tuskegee until the department was dissolved. Her dedication to encouraging other Black students to pursue STEM degrees included the development of programs for girls in science.
