Dr. Jesse Jarue Mark, Jr. was one of the first Black people to earn a Ph.D. in botany. He is also assumed to be the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in Botany from Iowa State College (now University). Dr. Mark served on the faculty at Kentucky State Industrial College (now Kentucky State University) and Iowa State College. His research focused on the science of crop resilience and productivity, with a focus on how temperature and climate affect alfalfa production. Dr. Mark was also a Rockefeller Agriculture Fellow.
