Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb was a leading cancer researcher and biologist. Her research focused on skin cancer, specifically the ability of melanin to protect skin from damage. Dr. Plummer began her academic pursuits at the University of Michigan, but quickly transferred to Talladega College when she learned that all Black students had to reside in segregated housing. In addition to her research, Dr. Plummer held various academic positions, including president of Caifornia State University, Fullerton. She also advocated strongly for diversity in STEM and was awarded the National Academy of Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award for her advocacy.
