Dr. Lilia Ann Abron is the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemical engineering (1972). She is also the first Black woman to start an environmental engineering firm (PEER Consultants, PC). She later founded PEER Africa to build energy-efficient homes in post-apartheid South Africa. Dr. Abron has also held faculty positions at Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University, and Howard University.
