Dr. Lloyd Noel Ferguson was the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, only three years after earning his undergraduate degree. He began his career at North Carolina A&T University and later moved to Howard University, where he established the first Ph.D. program in chemistry at any HBCU. Dr. Ferguson was also one of the founders of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers.
