Dr. Marguerite Thomas Williams was the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in geology. While a student at Howard University, she studied under Dr. Ernest Everett Just. Upon completion of her degree, she began teaching at Miner Teachers College (Normal School for Colored Girls), which was established to train Black women teachers in Washington, DC. After earning her Ph.D. from Columbia University, she remained at Miner Teachers College, while also teaching courses at Howard University.
