Dr. May Edward Chinn was the first Black woman to earn a medical degree from Bellevue Hospital Medical College (now NYU Medical School). She was also the first Black woman to intern at the Harlem Hospital. Dr. Sanger also worked with Dr. George Papanicolaou, the creator of the Pap smear, on research into cervical cancer screenings (which eventually resulted in the creation of the test). Dr. Chinn worked in cancer research throughout her career, including positions at the New York Infirmary and Strang Cancer Clinic, where she pioneered the protocol for predicting cancer probabilities using family medical history.

Fun Fact: Originally a music major, Dr. Chinn taught piano lessons to children and accompanied Paul Robeson. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
