Dr. Patricia Bath is the first Black person to complete a residency in ophthalmology, the first female faculty member in UCLA’s Department of Ophthalmology, and the first Black female doctor to receive a medical patent. Her Laserphaco Probe improved treatment for cataract patients worldwide by making it less painful and more precise than prior methods.
