Dr. Roger Arliner Young was the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in zoology.

Dr. Roger Arliner Young was the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in zoology. While a student at Howard University, Dr. Young was mentored by Dr. Ernest Just. She also taught at several HBCUs, including North Carolina Central University, Shaw University, Jackson State University, and Southern University. Dr. Young was also a member of the NAACP, and spent time helping to register voters across North Carolina.
