Dr. Ruth Ella Moore was the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in a natural science in the U.S. While still a graduate student, she taught at Tennessee State University. Upon graduation, she served as a professor and department head of bacteriology at Howard University.

Fun Fact: Dr. Moore was also a talented seamstress, making most of her wardrobe (day and evening wear) with no formal training in fashion design.
