Dr. William Warrick Cardozo was a physician and pediatrician who pioneered research on sickle cell anemia. Specifically, he determined that the disease almost exclusively affected people of African descent; not all people with sickle cells were anemic; not all patients died of sickle cell disease; and no successful treatment was identified. A DC native, Dr. Cardozo also worked in Howard University’s College of Medicine and Freedmen’s Hospital.
