Mrs. Hattie Scott Peterson is believed to be the first Black woman to earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Upon graduation from Howard University, Mrs. Peterson joined the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as a survey and cartographic engineer. She later became the first woman to join the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), where she advocated for women in engineering careers.
