Mr. Alan Emtage is a computer scientist who designed and implemented the world’s first Internet search engine. In 1989 (while a graduate student at McGill University), Mr. Emtage conceptualized and implemented Archie, a search engine that allowed users to find specific files. Upon graduation, Mr. Emtage founded Bunyip Information Systems, Inc., which is the world’s first fully dedicated Internet search company. He is also a founding member of the Internet Society and has chaired numerous working groups at the Internet Engineering Task Force, including the one that created the standard for Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), which are used to access every website and webpage used today.
