Mrs. Marjorie S. Joyner was the inventor of the permanent waving machine, which provided an easier method for curling straight hair and straightening curly hair. Born from the need to create wave-based curls (which became the trademark of entertainers such as Josephine Baker), Mrs. Joyner invented the machine as a method to save time in the styling process. Her invention was based on the heating of pot roast using multiple roads to ensure proper heat throughout the meat. Her patent was issued in 1928, and the technique was used by both Black and White women worldwide.

Fun Fact: Because Mrs. Joyner was an employee of Madame CJ Walker’s during the time of her invention, rights for the machine were assigned to Walker and not Joyner.
