Dr. Nathaniel O. Calloway was the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry from Iowa State University. As a child, Dr. Calloway spent time in his hometown of Tuskegee, AL with George Washington Carver, who was a professor at Tuskegee Institute at the time. After spending several years as a successful chemistry professor at Fisk University, Dr. Calloway decided to pursue a medical degree at the University of Chicago. Upon graduation, he became a practicing physician and professor at the University of Illinois Medical School, and he established the Medical Associates Clinic in Chicago.
